Two young up-and-coming rappers from Delft have used their talent to raise much-needed funds to buy school stationery for primary school pupils in their community.

Ayabonga Maqhude, 24, and Brighton Jacobs, 19, said it was their tough upbringing that inspired them to make a difference in the lives of others.

Maqhude and Jacobs yesterday held an event called “Back 2 School”, featuring local hip-hop artists, dancers and food stalls at the Eric Park stadium hall in Belhar - in an effort to sponsor about 20 children from Sunray Primary School in Delft with school stationery.

“Growing up it was hard going to school without the necessary equipment,” said Jacobs. “Aim of this event is to boost the self-esteem of young children and help them look forward to attending school.”

Maqhude added that he had come from a broken home and experienced many financial difficulties while studying. “There were times I could not attend classes because I did not have transport money,” he said. “I know there are other kids like me I want to put a smile on their faces.”

Maqhude said they were calling for help from corporate sponsors. He can be contacted on 076 333 9356.
