Cape Town – Cash-strapped holidaymakers can still enjoy a lot of festive season fun and beat the budget without breaking the bank, or getting themselves sucked into unnecessary debt.

Conscious of economic pressures on South Africans, Paarl and Wellington Tourism general manager Annelize Stroebel said tourism offices in the region had compiled a list of affordable fun things for people to do.

“We’ve looked at the offerings by our members that could help to make memorable summer holiday memories even if you are a bit cash-conscious.

"We now have a number of options that are free or cost under R100 or even R50. We hope this will encourage visitors to explore our beautiful region.”

Stroebel said for R50 or less, visitors could do olive tasting at Cascade Manor and Villamar, beer tasting at Berg River Brewery and Wellington Wines, or picnic in picturesque Landskroon or at the Afrikaans Language Monument.

They can also buy a hiking trail pass at Welvanpas Family Vineyards, entry to the Wellington Museum, chocolate tasting at De Villiers Chocolate at Spice Route Destination or taste freshly-baked roosterkoek with toppings at Windmeul Kelder.

R100 or less gets visitors a day pass from Hero Adventures at Rhebokskloof and Spice Route, entry to the snake centre, snake shows, croc pond tour and fishing at Le Bonheur Reptile Adventures or a ticket to the Galileo Outdoor Cinema showing at various venues.

Visitors can also do a KWV Cellar tour, the Alpaca Loom Coffee Shop and Weaving Studio or visit Paarl Rock and Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve.

There is a Salem Biblical Garden biblical garden tour, hikes in the Limietberg Nature Reserve and daily garden tours at Babylonstoren (R20 for adults, R10 for kids).

Free activities in Paarl include visiting Paarl Rock, viewing 15 protea species in the Meulwater Wild Flower Garden at Paarl Mountain, doing the weekly Paarl Park Run or taking a scenic drive up the Du Toitskloof Pass.
