Cape Town - Public health facilities in the Western Cape welcomed 192 bundles of joy born on New Years Day.

The first baby, a boy, was born at Mitchells Plain Hospital at 12.25am, weighing 3.6 kg, to mother Ashiekia Ellie.

The first baby of 2023 was born to Ashiekia Ellie at Mitchells Plain Hospital.

Two sets of twins were also born, one set at New Somerset Hospital, and the other at Tygerberg Hospital.

“We congratulate the families of the newborns on the safe arrival of their little bundles of joy and wish them many years of happiness and good health. May you cherish the time together with your little ones, as parenthood is one of the most fulfilling and at times tough journeys,” the provincial health department said.

They added that the total number of births was subject to change as more births are reported.

“A child’s health is most vulnerable during the first 1 000 days of its life. This period, from conception until a child’s second birthday, offers a unique window of opportunity to shape healthier and more prosperous futures. The importance of having your baby fully immunised against diseases cannot be stressed enough.”
