Cape Town – A 34-year-old man is expected to appear in court following the discovery of an arms cache in his home in De Wet Street, Bellville South this week.

Police spokesperson Andrè Traut said in their pursuit to disarm criminals in the province, members of the Anti-Gang Unit teamed up with Bellville South detectives on Wednesday afternoon at about 4pm and conducted an intelligence driven operation at a garage in Kasselsvlei Road.

“Information suggested that the occupants of two vehicles will meet at the garage for an illegal firearm transaction,” Traut said.

When the vehicles arrived, they were searched.

The police found a 9mm pistol without a serial number and two magazines in one of the vehicles.

“The driver, a 34-year-old man was arrested and further interrogation led SAPS to his residence in De Wet Street Bellville South where an arms cache comprising seven firearms, two revolver frames, two gas guns and an assortment of ammunition were discovered in a small room attached to his house," Traut said.

“The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s possession of the firearms and ammunition are under investigation while he is awaiting his court appearance in Bellville on charges of possession of prohibited firearms, illegal possession of firearms and the illegal possession of ammunition,” Traut added.
