Cape Town - The Athlone Vaccination Centre of Hope will be the first vaccination site in the Western Cape to offer both a walk-through and drive-through service.

The Western Cape Government, in partnership with the City of Cape Town, will undertake an oversight visit on Monday on the readiness of the centre, which is expected to welcome its first clients on Tuesday.

According to the health department spokesperson Mark van der Heever, this approach will ensure a quick and efficient vaccination to both uninsured and insured clients.

“Though the drive-through site will only be operational at the end of August, once operational, the site will be able to vaccinate almost 4 000 people per day between the two service options,” said Van der Heever

Premier Alan Winde will be joined by the Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo, the head of Health Dr Keith Cloete and executive mayor Dan Plato for the oversight visit.

Meanwhile, in yet another first for the province, the GrandWest vaccination centre will become the first approved hospitality and leisure industry Covid-19 workplace vaccination site and the third in the country.

The site, located in GrandWest’s Market Hall, adjacent to the Grand Arena, is expected to start the vaccination programme at about 9am on Monday and will accept walk-ins.

Operating times will be between 9am and 3pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the first week of October.

The Sun International-owned complex, and its Sun City and Wild Coast Sun resorts, are the industry’s first to be inspected and approved by the Department of Health and to begin administering vaccinations.
