Cape Town – It's been a busy fire season for firefighters so far, who have worked tirelessly to contain and extinguish blazes which have threatened both life and property across the province.

Yesterday, mop-up operations continued in Mossel Bay, where a fire had injured a firefighter and gutted two houses.

“Well done to all firefighters and pilots in bringing the Hartenbos fire under control. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the firefighter who was injured during fire-fighting operations. We wish you a speedy recovery,” Working on Fire (WoF) said.

The Robinson Pass, which links Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn, had been closed for the most part of the afternoon on Monday when the wildfire started.

The SA Weather Service issued an “extremely high fire danger” warning as temperatures are expected to soar over the Khai-Ma Municipality, Namakwa District, in the Northern Cape.

On the Cape Flats, the temperature is expected to reach 28 degrees Celsius.

In Betty's Bay in the Overstrand, firefighters recently had to contain a fire which claimed the life of one person and resulted in the evacuation of some residents from their homes. The Overstrand municipality said the Hangklip road will be closed for the next two weeks for resealing.

Eskom also confirmed that 20 of the around 40 kiosks were replaced and/or repaired at the weekend.

"Every effort is being made to ensure the balance is attended to, until such time that electricity is restored to all affected.

"The Eskom teams present in the vicinity are further attending to all other supply interruptions in the surrounds as well," the Overstrand municipality said.
