Scores of people took to the Sea Point promenade for the ninth annual “Walk For Freedom” until Palestine is liberated.
The walk was also to honour Shaykhul Aqsa, Moulana Ihsaan Hendricks and Dr Ebrahim Akoojee, who gave their lives to work towards a liberated and free Palestine.
It was led by Palestinian activist Shaykh Ebrahim Gabriels and other leaders, who all support the call for Palestine and Masjidul Aqsa to be protected.
Former Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) leader and prominent Islamic scholar Hendricks died in August after a long illness, aged 54.
Akoojee, a well-known medical doctor and pro-Palestinian activist, died at his home in Surrey Estate last year.
Gabriels said the march and messages from those in attendance were recorded and sent to the people of Gaza and Palestine.
“We want them to know that we feel their pain and loss of loved ones, and will continue to pray to Allah until they are free and liberated.
"Whenever we speak about Moulana Hendricks we get emotional, as we do for Dr Akoojee, as he gave his life for a free Palestine,” he said.
The day was followed by activities which included soccer and cricket tournaments, jumping castles and face-painting, as well as a variety of stalls.
MJC deputy president Moulana Abdul Khaliq Ebrahim Allie addressed the packed Greenpoint track, saying: “We cannot efficiently thank Allah for this day, the Palestinian cause or the lights of Moulana Ihsaan Hendricks and Dr Ebrahim Akoojee. They inspired us and instilled within us the consciousness to lead the struggle for a liberated Palestine.”
