CAPE TOWN - The suspects who shot and killed a 19-year-old in Khayelitsha while he was sitting in a garage with a friend are yet to be arrested.

The man was shot and killed by unknown suspects who were driving a grey Avanza on Saturday night.

The friend of the deceased managed to escape unscathed.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said: “At around 8.30pm a 19-year-old man was shot and killed in Apple Close Khwezi, Khayelitsha, by an unknown suspect who is yet to be arrested.”

A neighbour, Siphesihle Mlungu, said the community needed night patrollers to prevent escalating crime in the area.

“We heard gunshots but I thought it was just people being naughty as usual.

“After a minute I heard people crying and that is when we went out to see what was happening.

“One person, who is a friend of my neighbour, was shot dead.

The family of the deceased could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

Thembokwezi Crime Watch said Saps was calling on anyone with information to get in touch with the police station.

“We received reports of a fatal shooting last night in Thembani.

“It is reported that unknown suspects arrived in an unidentified vehicle and started shooting at males sitting at a garage which left one victim fatally wounded,” read their statement.

Meanwhile, in Vlei informal settlement, Philippi, the dumped body of an unknown person was found with stab wounds on Friday.

According to Vlei residents, the body belonged to a suspect who was wanted for robbing people and stealing three flat screens in the area.

A resident said crime in the area has escalated to such an extent that people were carrying weapons when taking transport to work.

“It is hard to live in this area, especially for people like me who wake up in the early hours to catch a taxi or bus to work. We are being robbed almost every day, we now have to carry weapons to work to protect ourselves.

“People have been complaining about four unknown boys who wait for people at the bus stop to rob them.

“They robbed an old lady last week at gunpoint and took everything. The lady had to go back to her house and not go to work because of these boys.”

Police did not reply by deadline on Sunday.
