HEAVY rainfall is expected today and tomorrow which may lead to flash floods.

The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre issued an alert yesterday, saying that several areas were particularly vulnerable to flash floods, including the Cape Metropole, southern parts of the West Coast District, western parts of the Central Karoo, Overberg, Cape Winelands and Eden Districts.

“The SA Weather Services has forecast heavy rainfall (as high as 50mm) and cold front conditions in many parts of the Western Cape, with weather warnings set for (today and tomorrow),” it said.

“In addition, gale-force easterly/south-easterly winds (65-70km/h) are expected from Table Bay to Cape Agulhas and offshore of the South Coast (today and tomorrow). The weather conditions could produce areas of ponding water on roads, or cause streams and stormwater systems to rise significantly – thus leading to flooding and flash flooding – particularly in low-lying areas.”

The centre said the city would monitor the levels of water across the city.

“There is also a risk of landslides, mudslides and rock falls in the mountainous areas, and particularly where there are steep slopes due to periodic heavy rains.”
