Cape Town – The Samora Machel Community Policing Forum (CPF) and area councillor have expressed concern over the increase of crime in the area, many of them mob justice attacks.

This follows the murder of a 41-year-old man whose body was discovered by residents on Sunday morning in Eyadni informal settlement.

Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk said Samora Machel police are investigating the murder.

"According to reports, members received a complaint of a body that was lying between the shacks. Upon their arrival at the scene, they found the body of the male, lying on his back between the shacks.

’’The paramedics were called to the scene but declared the man dead. The injury was an open wound to the head, possibly assaulted. At this stage the suspect (s) is unknown and the motive is yet to be established.”

Councillor Sithembiso Mzobe said: “The level of crime in Samora Machel is appalling. Just now the clinic is closed after a robbery took place in broad daylight.

’’Before that, City officials were robbed of their valuables. I don’t know what has sparked this sort of behaviour but it is very concerning.”

Member of the CPF Luvuyo Mamba said that the recent spike in mob justice incidents caused panic and unrest in the community.

“Not so long ago, a 50-year-old woman was attacked in her home and her bloodied body was discovered by her daughter, then two young men were beaten to death, now a man, who was trying to fight off robbers, was beaten to death by criminals, it’s appalling.

“These incidents happen in Samora Machel and we have a growing concern, we strongly condemn crime and violence, the police must assist us urgently.”

Anyone with any information about the recent murder of the 41-year-old man can anonymously contact the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Dlabantu on 071 675 4038, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line on 32211.
