Thousands of spectators celebrated Heritage Day watching tyre-slaying action on the Grand Parade when Drift City kicked off its third year yesterday.

About 36 local and international drifters drew hundreds of spectators to the doorsteps of the City Hall and Castle of Good Hope.

Competitors - including sole female competitor Clare Vale - participated on a mirrored obstacle course.

The competition acts as an unofficial qualifier for the Gymkhana GRiD which takes place on December 1.

Otto Graven returned to defend his title yesterday. His competition turned up in their purpose-built, high-powered machines.

Drift City spokesperson Jason Clark said: “It’s become a tough act to follow after the success of Drift City 2017, but we won’t let that stop us. We are constantly striving to evolve, improve and show love and respect to the drivers and fans from Cape Town and from outside the Mother City.”

Mayco member for safety and security, and social services JP Smith said the event attracted greater numbers than in previous years.

“Now in its third year running, the race organisers have managed to bring in one international driver and people have responded with bigger audiences than last year.

"The City has increased sponsorship this year to R150 000 towards City services and free usage of the Grand Parade.”
