Former Bafana Bafana player Benni McCarthy was robbed at gunpoint yesterday afternoon in Johannesburg, police said.
McCarthy was inside a barber shop in a shopping centre after having come from the airport. Three suspects came in and held everyone at gunpoint, police said. A suspect holding a firearm approached McCarthy and took his wristwatch, diamond earring and wedding ring, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.
The suspects fled in a black BMW.
McCarthy’s manager, Percy Adams, said about nine other customers were in the shop. Adams said only McCarthy was targeted in the robbery.
