Cape Town – Search efforts continue for a Franschhoek man who went missing at Strand beach on Wednesday.

NSRI Gordons Bay station commander Alan Meiklejohn said duty crews were alerted to reports of a person missing in the mid surf break at Strand beach near to the NSRI Gordons Bay satellite rescue station before 5pm.

Five friends from Franschhoek had been at the beach together for the day when the man reportedly went missing in the water while swimming with two of the friends.

NSRI rescue swimmers, City of Cape Town (CoCT) lifeguards, WC Government Health EMS, GB Med ambulance services, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, CoCT Law Enforcement Marine Unit, SA Police Services and Strand community neighbourhood watch responded to the scene.

The NSRI rescue craft Zelda was launched and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter responded.

The WC Government Health EMS rescue squad deployed a drone to assist in the search.

“Despite an extensive air, sea and shoreline search there remains no sign of a 31 year old Franschhoek man.

“Police divers are continuing in an ongoing search. NSRI Gordons Bay, Strand and CoCT lifeguards and Law Enforcement officers are keeping a watch,” Meiklejohn said.
