Cape Town - The Robben Island Museum (RIM) is taking part in SA Tourism’s “Gimme Summer that Sho’t Left!” campaign targeted at the domestic travel market, and will be offering a free ticket for a child accompanied by a parent on a trip to the iconic island this holiday.

“As South Africans from the rest of the country prepare to travel to Cape Town, we are cognisant of limited disposable income and a preference for holiday activities that offer value for money.

To this end, and in pursuit of our commitment to make RIM more accessible to locals, it allows us the opportunity to give more people access to an awe-inspiring visit to this iconic World Heritage Site, that prioritises a connection with our public and cultural heritage,” said Siphuxolo Mazwi, RIM senior manager for marketing and tourism.

RIM is offering a complimentary ticket for one child under 18, with every adult buying a ticket for the 5pm tour. The special, which runs from December 15, 2022 to January,15 2023, is applicable from Monday to Sunday.

“From the time visitors depart at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island, they are taken on an experiential journey back in time where the stories of banishment, exile, punishment, sacrifice and victories hard won, come to life at the hands of expert tour guides and former political prisoners who authentically narrate their experiences, not from manuscripts and archives, but etched into their memories over the many brutal and heart-warming years spent on the island.

“This is the perfect opportunity for families to experience a day out, offering their children so much more than a freebie. A trip to Robben Island Museum is an enriching, educational, fun and thought-provoking experience that not only ticks the box for a lesson in history and heritage, but also exposes visitors to world-class marine conservation,” said Mazwi.

Local visitor ticket prices are R400 per adult. International visitors pay R600 for adults and R310 for children under 18. Tickets can be bought online via the RIM website, www.robben-island.org.za.
