Herolds Bay’s cliff claims another victim

Cape Town – The official identification of the body of a woman who became the latest to plummet down Voelklip in Herolds Bay, is yet to be done.

The woman was one of two victims in just a week, who died along the private stretch of road on Friday.

Earlier this week, the body of a 65-year-old man, believed to be from Mossel Bay had also been found in the sea below.

Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie confirmed the incident, saying a passer-by noticed tracks that left the gravel roadway.

“The official identification has not been done yet.

“The discovery of the body of a deceased woman was made by a motorcycle rider who was on an excursion driving on the Voëlklip gravel road at about 12:15 on Friday.

“Witness report suggests that the rider was driving on the gravel road when he noticed vehicle track marks on the first sharp bend, indicating that a vehicle could have left the road and drove over the cliff.

“(On) further inspection he noticed the lifeless body of a female halfway down the cliff, laying on the rocks with multiple injuries.

“He also noticed a Toyota bakkie and cloths drifting further down in the water.

“He then alerted police and emergency who responded rapidly,” said Pojie.

The body of a woman in her mid-thirties, believed to be from Groot Brak River, was recovered by medical rescue personnel and handed to Forensic Pathology Services.

“An autopsy will be performed on the body to determine the possible cause of death.

“George police subsequent opened an Inquest docket for further investigation,” said Pojie.
