Cape Town - With the help of hundreds of locals, non-profit organisation Ladles of Love has broken a World Record for the longest line of food cans, at 6.7 km.

All for a good cause, the 90 000 food cans used for the record will be donated across the Cape to beneficiaries and soup kitchens which serve millions daily.

Ladles of Love founder Danny Diliberto said it was not an easy journey to get to the record attempt on Sunday at the V&A Waterfront.

The event was initially to take place in honour of Mandela Day in July but was postponed as a result of the pandemic and lockdown restrictions.

Diliberto said the delay turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it gave the Ladles team time to prepare for the mammoth undertaking, to break the Canadian-held record of 3.28km for 44 966 cans.

Member of the public joined in on efforts to break the World Record for the longest line of food cans.

Diliberto said around 1 000 people came to help assemble the cans, and in two hours, they had built the 6.7km line.

“The auditors did their process and we are sending off the details to make it an official Guinness World Record.

“The entire line of food cans had to be filmed - it amounted to about 30gigs of footage,” he said.

Diliberto said that the cans were generously donated by partners, sponsors and members of the public who also supported through sharing ads, posts and spreading the word about the initiative.

“The response has been unbelievable, and as usual, Cape Town came through. And more so in a difficult time, people have been more giving.

“Ladles of Love has been about Love Activism. Love Activism is what drives (us). There is too much hate, war in the world. We need love, and this was a perfect example of that… 90 000 acts of kindness.”

The initiative was made possible in partnership with V&A Waterfront, Coronation Fund Managers, CapeTalk, with sponsors DENNY, Pick n Pay, Lucky Star and Sun International.
