Cape Town - City of Cape Town metro police officers arrested two suspects in connection with a drive-by shooting in Heideveld on Monday morning.

Officers on patrol in the area at about 9am heard gunshots and responded, the City said.

Community members informed them that two people were wounded by the occupants of a black Audi.

Officers searched the area, spotted the car and gave chase.

During the pursuit, the vehicle occupants threw a 9mm pistol from the window.

“Meanwhile, members of the Camera Response Unit heard radio broadcasts that the Audi was headed their way, so they cleared the roadway and set up a post.

“The suspects collided with the patrol vehicle and came to a standstill,” the City said.

Metro police officers arrested two suspects, aged 28 and 32, on charges of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving, possession of an illegal firearm, possession of ammunition, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The suspects were detained at Manenberg SAPS.

Meanwhile, endeavours by police in the Western Cape to rid communities of firearms and drugs yielded positive results during crime prevention operations on Friday.

Members of the Provincial Extortion Task Team conducted an intelligence-driven operation in the Philippi policing precinct and arrested a man found packaging drugs in the Oasis Pacific informal settlement.

The members confiscated 279 packets of crystal meth and 265 grams of unpacked crystal meth with an estimated street value of R500 000. Upon further search of the dwelling, the members found a pistol with ammunition hidden under a pillow in a room.

The members searched a second dwelling and found two refuse bags containing dagga and arrested a 23-year-old man. A third dwelling was searched and 100 mandrax tablets and a large amount of dagga were confiscated.

Two men aged 34 and 35 were arrested and detained. The suspects are due to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone Magistrate’s court on Monday.
