Cape Town - In what could be a taxi industry-related murder, three men were killed in a hail of bullets at the weekend in Khayelitsha.

The Site C community, which has seen a lot of violent crime, including mass shootings, was on Saturday night rocked by the killing of three men that also left a bystander wounded.

Detectives assigned to the provincial Taxi Task Team are now investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.

According to provincial police spokesperson Andrè Traut, local police officers were alerted to the shooting on the corners of Idada and Nyebelele streets at about 8.15pm.

He said upon their arrival at the scene, the bodies of two men were discovered with gunshot wounds next to a Toyota Quantum taxi, while the third body was found inside the vehicle.

“According to reports, four unknown gunmen opened fire at the victims in what we believe is related to the taxi industry. The bystander who sustained a gunshot wound was admitted to hospital for treatment,” said Traut.

Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi said their office had not received any reports of a member being shot over the weekend, and they would have known by Monday if any of their members were killed.

The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Idada Street is also where six people were shot and killed on May 9 this year, in what was believed to be an extortion-related feud between two gangs.
