Award-winning photographer Phando Jikelo is in line for another major honour as he was announced a finalist of this year’s Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards.

The announcement came less than a week after Jikelo, a former Cape Times photographer, made the top five finalists in the Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest online voting for a front-page picture of a Grabouw housing protest he produced while part of the Cape Times team last year.

Yesterday, Standard Bank and the Publishers Support Services announced that Jikelo, now with the African News Agency (ANA), was among the finalists for his Grabouw housing protest and a feature about a visually impaired Blackheath resident, both produced while he was working for the Cape Times. Jikelo was also nominated for his picture titled “BlitzBoks fall at final hurdle”.

“Being nominated three times for different stories is huge. This just shows that being passionate about the work we do will take us far.

“The story of a blind lady, Mirtle Virrooi, that I’m nominated for touched me so much. I wish there can be a change in her life.”

The Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards acknowledges those who capture the stories of “our times”.

Awards are presented for stand-out contributions in diverse categories that reflect the disciplines of those who contribute to the end result of the published story.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on October 19, 2017. - Staff Writer
