Cape Town – A Mossel Bay waste transfer station has reopened after two security guards were shot dead by unknown suspects on Monday.

The Louis Fourie Road transfer station was closed due to police investigations following the incident.

The police, municipal law enforcement services and forensic services were dispatched to the scene.

Police spokesperson, Christopher Spies, said police were alerted about two bodies with gunshot wounds found outside the guarding office on site on Monday afternoon.

“Upon arrival, they found the victims both aged 28 with gunshot wounds to the head. The pair was deployed to perform guarding duties at the site the previous night,” he said.

The deceased have been identified as Loyiso Plaatjies and Siphelele Ngwedle.

Spies said the motive for the killing was yet to be established.

“Crime scene experts combed the scene for clues while the motive for the killing is yet to be established.

“The suspect/s are still at large and a search for those responsible for the incident is under way.

“An investigation continues,” he said.

Community activist Faizel Porter said crime was escalating in Mossel Bay.

“We notice a higher rate of organised crime.

“Local garages and shops has been the recent targets.

“But the latest incident where two guardsmen lost their lives on duty at a local dumping site raises eyebrows as the main question would be; what on earth could be so important on such a site that triggers the act of death.

“I strongly condemn any act of violence and more specially these killings of innocent people,” he said.

Police have urged anyone with information which could lead to the arrests of the perpetrators to contact the Kwanonqaba police at 044 606 5609 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
