Mothership Woof has become the first dog adoption centre in the heart of the city.
The centre's launch coincided with World Animal Day yesterday.
The Woof Project is an initiative of Oscars Arc, an NPO dedicated to inspiring dog adoption and saving dogs’ lives.
Founder Joanne Lefson said: “There are incredible dogs dying for a second chance in shelters everywhere.”
Of the estimated 25000 dogs that enter the main eight shelters in the Western Cape each year, only about 2500 were adopted.
“The unfortunate reality is that most dogs that enter shelters never get out alive.” The project launched its pop-up mobile initiative in March this year.
"They've taken dogs from existing shelters and through creative marketing, 304 dogs have been adopted in 21 weekends. This is a 33% increase in the total Western Cape adoption rates.
“We aim to increase this to 100% by 2020 and then expand within South Africa and across the globe.
“We aim to be the place to go when anyone wants to acquire a dog.
“Shelter dogs are amazing dogs and together, we aim to home them all.”
She said all the dogs were vaccinated, sterilised and “ready to go to their new home after a brief home check”.
Mothership WOOF can be found on the corner of Buitengracht and Castle streets, at the @FRits Dog Park.
They will be available to view Monday to Friday between 12:30pm and 2pm weekly.
Over weekends, more dogs are ready for adoption at their mobile dog adoption unit.
