A day after a Stellenbosch guest-house owner was murdered one of the suspects arrived home in new clothes and shoes, the Western Cape High Court heard on Monday.

The suspect in question also stated that he had stolen the 80-year-old Marie Verwey's "gold", testified Porsche September, the girlfriend of one of the accused, Andre Coetzee, News24 reported.

Coetzee, Nicoleze Geldenhuys, Romeo Hendricks and Enrico Mallherbe are accused of robbery with aggravating circumstances and murdering Verwey on February 16 last year. It's alleged Verwey was robbed of jewellery and a camera valued at R700 000.

Malherbe has pleaded guilty on all the charges against him and stated in his plea explanation that he was with the rest of the accused when they were arrested.

According to Malherbe, Geldenhuys asked him whether he would be willing to stab Verwey while they emptied two safes.

Before the robbery, September testified that Geldenhuys told her: "When your man comes back, he will be sorted out." She only saw him again the following evening.

"He had new clothes on and shopping bags with new clothes and shoes. I asked him where he got it, and he said he would tell me later and that I have to get ready to go out with him that evening."

Coetzee informed her of a white woman that had been murdered and that he had "helped to take her gold to the car". They never spoke about it again.

The case continues.
