Cape Town – A 25-year-old man found himself behind bars after his first court appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court on Friday for allegedly raping a young girl.

It is alleged that the 25-year-old sexually assaulted his neighbour's 6-year-old child.

Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said the man remained in custody pending a formal bail application.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the complainant (the mother of the victim) noticed she was scared to be touched when she wanted to bath her daughter. Upon further examination she noticed that the victim’s private parts showed signs of redness and that there was some discharge present as well.

“When questioned by her mother, she disclosed that when she was at her father’s house the previous day, the suspect, who is a neighbour, came and took her to his place where he raped her. She was taken to the local hospital where it was confirmed that she was violated,” he said.

In another incident, a 28-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the rape of a 14-year-old in Knysna.

“It is alleged that the victim, 14, her aunt and friends were drinking at a residence in Knysna until about 9pm when everyone left and she and her aunt went to sleep as they were apparently too intoxicated. It is further alleged that the aunt’s boyfriend came back later and made remarks towards the victim. Thereafter he forced her into the bathroom where he allegedly raped her. She cried and attracted the attention of her aunt. The suspect was subsequently arrested and is still in custody, pending a formal bail application,” said Pojie.
