Metrorail's notoriously dangerous Central Line is still not back in operation.

Following cable theft and vandalism at sub-stations in Bonteheuwel and Nyanga more than a week ago, and the derailment of a test train on Thursday, the service remains suspended.

This is according to Sonja Carstens, spokesperson for United National Transport Union (Untu), which represents half of Metrorail’s employees.

Technicians are continuing to effect repairs, according to Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott, who added that the

public will be informed as soon as services are ready to be resumed.

She said commuters with monthly tickets should utilise the services of Golden Arrow bus services during off-peak hours.

Meanwhile, commuters said they were outraged at the continued suspension of the service.

It is now three weeks since a security guard was shot

and killed at Chris Hani

station.

Carstens said this was very sad for commuters, who have been badly affected.

“We said 18 months ago when Piet Botha was killed that this is a very complex issue and a holistic approach was needed.”

She said Metrorail was up against well-organised criminals, who have no regard for the poorest of the poor who have been most affected.

“From our side, our members are ready to resume their duties.

“They have been ready since last week Wednesday It is very unfortunate that

commuters have to pay the price.”

She urged communities to report criminals who damage Metrorail’s infrastructure.
