A total of 53 people were arrested in Nyanga during Monday’s violent strike by taxi drivers, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

“Community members made use of the chaotic circumstances that was brought on by the strike to loot local business in the Browns Farm area,” police spokeswoman Henrietta van Niekerk said.

“The offences include business robbery, malicious damage to property, public violence and possession of stolen property.”

The suspects, aged between 18 and 25, are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
