Police are investigating the cause of a fire which destroyed a train on Friday night in Belmont Park, Kraaifontein.

The affected train was heading from Kraaifontein to Muldersvlei. Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.

City of Cape Town spokesperson Tracy Whittaker said eight carriages have been destroyed and three more damaged after the train was set alight.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott was not available for comment yesterday.

Less than 12 hours after three carriages were set alight at the Cape Town station during April, four more carriages were set alight in Kraaifontein train station yard.
