Cape Town – Local food truck and eatery Rack ‘n Grill will keep the “Smash Burger” on their menu following a fruitful engagement with the Spur Group yesterday.

Rack ‘n Grill owner and chef Muammer Kasu said after meeting with the group yesterday, he was feeling positive about the way forward, with prospects of a collaboration.

“Nothing is confirmed yet, but we had a good meeting where ideas were put on the table. More details will be made available soon, but at the moment, the Smash Burger will remain on the menu. We will be keeping the name,” said Kasu.

The meeting comes after Kasu was served with legal papers by RocoMamas to change the name of one of his burgers.

Kasu received a letter dated April 14 from franchise chief executive Anton Geldenhuys that RocoMamas was the registered proprietor of the “Smashburger” in South Africa.

Spur Group spokesperson Moshe Apleni was unable to answer questions by deadline but indicated all parties are busy finalising matters after the meeting yesterday.

“All parties are engaging in talks among each other and in the process of an agreement, but this will be shared in due course,” said Apleni.

Earlier this week, Kasu received “overwhelming support” from local small businesses after he was served with the legal letter.

Other local eatery owners put their own spin on a “Smash Burger” as they said they were taking a stand against “corporate bullying tactics”.

Chairperson of Cape Town Food Truck Association, Hayden Seboa, said RocoMamas has a trademark for ’’Smashburger’’, while Kasu has named his ’’Smash Burger’’.
