Train services on the central line in Cape Town remained suspended on Monday afternoon as repairs to infrastructure by vandals are being repaired, Metrorail said.
Weekly and monthly Metrorail ticket holders travelling to areas such as Langa, Bishop Lavis, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha, among others, were encouraged to use Golden Arrow buses after 6.30pm.
Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker said technical teams were doing repairs "under armed escort", but he feared vandals would hit again.
"Our teams report from the site that they are being observed as they work," said Walker.

He called on police to assist them so services on the central line are back to normal on Tuesday.
"We are in engaging with SAPS [SA Police Service] management on how to deal with the increasingly aggressive and destructive attacks on infrastructure."
Walker apologised to commuters. At the same time, he called on them to "help us secure railway assets by reporting criminal activity".
"Unless all stakeholders and communities take a united stand against crime, the rail system is likely to remain targeted."
