Pretpria's minibus taxi drivers have vowed to make the city ungovernable if they do not get favourable responses to their demand for the total scrapping of traffic fines.

Tshwane Metro Council’s MMC of Roads and Transport, Sheila Lynn Senkubuge, said the taxi drivers would not accept the offer that they pay half of their fines. Senkubuge said the issue was out of her hands and lay with the provincial government.

The taxi operators had gathered from across the capital to march to the municipal headquarters in the city centre, Tshwane House. The drivers carried golf clubs, garden spades and baseball bats, and intimidated people who tried to take photos.

The protest left thousands of commuters stranded. Railway lines were also blocked, stopping trains from running.

The taxi drivers have given the city 14 days to respond or incur their wrath again.
