Cape Town - Visible safety patrols have been increased in Lower Tokai after reports of a new carguard that apparently threatens and intimidates forest users.

Parkscape has noted several reports of aggressive and threatening behaviour towards forest users in the Dennendal West area as well as altercations with carguards.

SA National Parks was also made aware of the incident and regular patrols were being conducted in the area.

Parkscape chairperson Nicky Schmidt urged forest users to be vigilant and report any incidents to the police.

“We recommend that you keep your distance and avoid engagement. The relevant authorities are aware. We receive, increasingly, reports from users of aggression exhibited by the carguards on Dennendal West Avenue. All we are able to do is advise the authorities.

“None of the carguards working the Dennendal West area are registered carguards. They are also not employed by any organisation and are not part of any structured or endorsed car-guarding scheme,” said Schmidt.

“This is a deeply sensitive situation. We are mindful that these guys are trying to make a living and that many forest users feel the need to help.

“However, aggression or threatening towards users serves no one, and raises community concerns of more serious risk. We also note that, after a very brief lull, there have been further reports of vehicle break-ins, which have been reported to SAPS. Do not leave valuables in your car and report break-ins, even if you feel it is minor, to SAPS.”

SANParks spokesperson Lauren Clayton said the organisation was aware of the incident and regular patrols were being conducted in the area.
