Cape Town – Late ANC member and freedom fighter Songezo Mjongile will be laid to rest today after a memorial service was held for him yesterday.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, former finance Minister Malusi Gigaba, ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Mcebisi Skwatsha were among those who attended the service at Gugulethu Comprehensive School yesterday.

Former member of the regional executive committee Nombeko Leputhing said they both joined the Struggle at a young age.

“We were given duties in the organisation, as young as we were. One of the duties was to mobilise students to make sure that the Struggle continued in the township and at schools,” Leputhing said.

“He later became my president at Cosas (the Congress of South African Students). He became a brother to me and most of the time we were together engaging in political issues and social issues abroad,” Leputhing said.

“He would not let anyone suffer in front of his eyes, he always had a helping hand when you were in need of something.

“I accompanied him to the airport and that was the last time I had a brother and sister chat with him. He wanted to unite ANC in the province, he was always there for the ANC at all times,” she said.

Mjongile died surrounded by his family last Friday in his Morningside home in Johannesburg after he suffered from colon cancer.
