Cape Town – Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the violent assault on a police officer in Knysna, that landed the officer in hospital on Friday.

The Lieutenant-Colonel was in the Knysna central business district when he was accosted by a group of men, according to police.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Christopher Spies, said the officer sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital by a member of the public.

The two suspects, aged 21 and 22, were arrested the same day.

They are facing charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

A third suspect, a 57-year-old, man was also arrested for obstructing a police officer in the wake of the attack.

“The 57-year-old man was arrested for obstructing a police officer from carrying out his duties,” Spies said.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of attempted murder and assault.

Western Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile welcomed the arrests.
