Cape Town - Police are investigating a case of house breaking at Samora Machel Library where two windows were broken, burglar bars removed, and a computer stolen from the staff workroom.

The library became the target of vandals and robbers earlier this week. Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said investigations were continuing.

“Samora Machel is investigating cases of housebreaking and theft after an incident at a library in Samora Machel. Several items were stolen. There have been no arrest as yet, investigations continue,” said Van Wyk.

Community activist Nico Mzalisi said he believed the installation of CCTV cameras in the community would decrease crime.

“We previously acquired CCTV cameras in the libraries, police stations and on the street, but the services are taking long to be delivered. The most important places that need cameras are libraries and on the streets of the township. I believe that the installation of cameras in our communities, especially in the hot spots, would decrease the level of crime.

“It makes no sense that people destroy what is meant to contribute in developing our society, but at the same time as a community we have a responsibility to safeguard our public premises. The things stolen at the library will be sold within the community but people will not report it.

Community services mayoral committee member Zahid Badroodien said the re-installation of the burglar bars would be done and security had been arranged.

“On Monday, services at the Weltevreden Library were suspended for about an hour to allow the police to take fingerprints and do preliminary investigations as there was a break-in.

“Two windows were broken and burglar bars removed.

“One desktop was stolen from the staff workroom. The library remains functional and the costs are still being calculated,” said Badroodien
