CAPE TOWN - The abandoned bull terrier, saved by community animal ambassador, Sivikele Mgwadleka, has responded so well to treatment that her adoption has taken place sooner than expected.

Amy, as she has been named, was taken to the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) in Philippi by the 13-year-old AWS SA Junior Animal Welfare Ambassador on September 23 after she was found tied up under a bridge.

The emaciated dog arrived and was diagnosed to be suffering from Canine Ehrlichiosis (a disease caused by a tick-borne bacteria called Ehrlichia canis) and was riddled with mange and fleas.

But after treatment, Amy is ready to meet her new family at her “fur-ever” home.

AWS spokesperson Allan Perrins said: “Amy owes her life and good fortune to Sivikile who rescued her after he found her tied up and abandoned under a bridge near his home. This is not the first dog (and definitely not the last) this little Community Hero has rescued.

“Earlier today Sivikile accompanied by a group of friends paid us a visit to drop off a milk crate containing two tiny mange ridden puppies that he felt needed our help and we expect him back again next week. This young man, who is an asset to his community, has a heart of gold and simply adores animals and we are pretty sure that there will be many more animals that will owe their lives to his incredible compassion.”

Perrins said Sivikele had been delighted to hear that Amy responded well to treatment and would soon be rehomed.

“He was so happy to hear that the bull terrier was doing well and that we had managed to find her a loving new home, and very, very pleased with the name chosen by her new family who can’t wait for her arrival in a couple of weeks’ time,” said Perrins.
