Cape Town - The US Embassy’s recent terror alert in Sandton is an affront to South Africa’s sovereignty.

It shows that Washington undermines our government and its people by interfering in internal affairs, and acting as the country’s security branch.

By issuing the so-called terror alert directly to South Africans, America showed a condescending and superior attitude.

Under normal circumstances, the embassy would have informed the South African government for it to publicly warn its citizens, or act on it.

But, alas. Not the self-appointed policeman of the world. The US. In its mind, all countries are satellite states and naturally its subordinates. While the alert triggered panic among many South Africans, it turned out to be a hoax.

What was interesting about it was the admission by the US Embassy that it did not have details about the nature and methodology of the alleged terror attack, except that it was supposedly to take place in Sandton last weekend.

The timing and nature of the alert raised more questions than answers. It came amid peace talks in the country between the Ethiopian government and its rivals, the Tigray. Both parties are engaged in a bloody civil war.

Lest we forget, South Africa has not played along in Ukraine. In this regard, the alert could have been a desperate attempt to scare South Africans and create the impression that they need US protection.

At best, the US has our best interests at heart. At worst, the alert could have been designed to stoke fear and instability in the country.

The US Embassy was also making a subtle statement about South Africa. The subtext of that alert was that they regard our country as their proxy state.

And they have a reason to think like that. Since Ramaphosa took over, he sidelined Brics in favour of the west.

He surbodinated South Africa to Western powers and their interests in the energy, pharmaceutical and mining sectors.

Ramaphosa’s government refused to buy or accredit Russian and Chinese vaccines.

The president has reduced South Africa to a Western satellite state. No wonder the US Embassy felt emboldened to directly communicate with South Africans about their security in their own country.
