As the debate rages on for a 15% electricity tariff increase for the next three years, civil society is standing firm against such a phenomenal increase.

CPI at the start of December was 5.2% and will not be any closer to 6% in the next few months.

The woes Eskom finds itself in is self-inflicted through reckless, self-enriching behaviour.

If anyone is to held accountable for the disaster it finds itself in, the blame should be laid at the directors and the government (its main shareholder). It is the government that appoints (cadres) persons to the Board.

The debt burden is going to be with us for a very long time. In the meantime it is us who will have to foot the bill through tariff increases and government bailouts, while the “fat cats keep milking the cow”.

What is required is a complete business/organisational transformation process, given that most SOEs are in dire straits.

It is time the people, led by dynamic politicians, take a stand against being overburdened for the enormous debts of some SOEs.
