The Sports Legends Hall of Fame has honoured sports people across various codes who did not get enough recognition in the apartheid era.

The initiative of Play Sport4Life (PS4L) saw 22 sports people inducted into their online portal and each individual presented with a plaque and a medal at a glitzy event held at the Kaleidoscope yesterday.

There were legends inducted from rugby, cricket, softball, table tennis, karate, soccer and tennis.

Soccer star Puzzy Jansen, rugby giant Aslam Toefy, table tennis icon Pedro Meyer and softball star Joyce Barendilla were among those honoured.

PS4L founder Miles October said: “During the apartheid era many sportsmen could not get recognition. Many never even got interviewed by journalists.

“With the passing of rugby legend Saait Magiet a month or so ago and last week soccer legend Reggie Jantjies, the issue has been front and centre on social media.

"Magiet and his brother Rushdie were both accomplished sportsmen in rugby and cricket, and the world was their oyster - if they had succumbed to being lured away from their non-racial principles.

“There is a fair amount of anger and disappointment in the community that people like Magiet, Jantjies and others, who have gone before them, are not recognised appropriately.”

October said they wanted to create a space where people could read about these sports stars and their achievements.

“Each and every one of these stars faced challenges that came with living in an unjust society that denied them the opportunity to achieve their potential,” he asserted.
