More than 2 000 people participated in the 17th annual RCS Gugulethu Reconciliation Race on Saturday and many more, including children, came out in support.

Race director Themba Shoko said the race was to help unite South Africa.

"I am sure everybody knows our history. It is a day when we all come together from every background," Shoko said.

"We have been doing this in Gugulethu for 17 years now.

"We thank the main sponsor, RCS, as well as to the Cape Times and all the other sponsors.”

Cape Times editor Aneez Salie said: “We are honoured and thrilled to be associated with this race. It is an important day in our history, with a lot to reconcile.

"The Gugs Reconciliation Race is in keeping with the Cape Times's ethos of building bridges between and within communities and to bridge the race, gender, class and generation gaps.

"So we’d like to thank and congratulate the Gugulethu Athletics Club, and RCS for this fine event.”

RCS chief executive Regan Adams said: “Our diversity is actually what binds us. The race is really all about unity.

"So, thank you all for coming out.

“To everyone from all walks in life who made it here today I really appreciate it, the club appreciates it.

"I would like to thank all the volunteers and appreciate the co-operation of Gugulethu.”

Gugulethu resident and TV sensation Siv Ngesi said it was an honour to be part of the race yet again.

“It is always a great race, the best I have ever run.”
