DURBAN - A Phoenix man accused of dealing in cocaine is out on R3 000 bail after appearing in the Phoenix Magistrate’s Court, north of Durban.

Poobalan Govender, 41, will appear in court again on November 3.

He was arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) KwaZulu-Natal and Durban Metro police narcotics unit.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said Govender was arrested after police received a tip-off that he was involved in drug dealing.

“An intelligence-driven operation was then conducted. Govender was intercepted in Greenbury, Phoenix. He was allegedly on his way to deliver a consignment of drugs. When his vehicle was searched, 361 pieces of crack cocaine and 100 grams of cocaine powder with a street value of approximately R86 100 were found,” Mhlongo said.

Govender was arrested and charged for drug dealing.

Meanwhile, on September 11, a police intelligence-driven operation at Stork Place in Bayview, Chatsworth, south of Durban, resulted in the seizure of 26 bags of pure cocaine powder, 56 mandrax tablets and 2 800 pieces of crack cocaine. The estimated street value of the recovered drugs is R310 790. Police seized R17 590 in cash, suspected to be the proceeds of drugs.

A 20-year-old man was arrested for drug dealing and drug possession.

Three days prior, also in Bayview, police officers from the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit arrested a 24-year-old man for drug-related cases. Police conducted a raid on premises on Summerfield Drive in Bayview. The man was found in possession of 725 pieces of rock cocaine and 67 mandrax tablets. The estimated street value of the recovered drugs is R54 000.
