DURBAN - A man arrested twice in 2020 for drug dealing was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
Emmanuel Dladla, 56, was sentenced last Thursday by the Camperdown Regional Court to 10 years direct imprisonment for dealing in drugs.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo said Dladla was arrested in April and October 2020 with a total of 898kgs of dagga.
Police had received information about a man who was transporting dagga from Swaziland to the Northern Cape. He was arrested in Pietermaritzburg in April, and in October, he was arrested again in Camperdown.
“The accused appeared in court on several occasions until he was convicted. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for each count of dealing in drugs which will run concurrently,” Nxumalo said.
When Dladla was arrested in October, the police said they spotted a panel van which was stopped and searched. Police found 25 40kg bags of dagga. The estimated street value of the dagga was R1.1 million. A man was placed under arrest for dealing as well as transportation of dagga, his vehicle was also seized for further investigation.
October media reports said the man was Dladla after he appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg District Court and was charged with “dealing in an undesirable dependence-producing substance. The bags of dagga weighed 898,65kg, with an estimated street value of R1.1 million.”
