Durban — A police officer is expected to appear in court on Thursday for corruption.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the officer was arrested on Wednesday by Hawks officers from the Durban Serious Corruption Investigation Unit.

Mhlongo said the warrant officer, aged 55, was arrested for corruption perpetrated in the Msinga area, central KwaZulu-Natal.

He said it was alleged that the warrant officer, who is stationed at the Msinga police station, attended a collision between a truck and the bakkie in the Msinga precinct.

He allegedly phoned the truck owner and requested R7 000 for the repairs of the bakkie. Cash was allegedly deposited into his bank account but he never paid the driver of the bakkie, Mhlongo said.

“A case of corruption was reported at Msinga police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members for further investigation,” Mhlongo said.

“He is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court today (Thursday).”
