DURBAN – Four armed suspects opened fire on a security guard who was carrying an undisclosed amount of money out of a grocery store in Westmead, Pinetown on Tuesday.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the robbery occurred just after 12pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Mbele said it was alleged that a security guard was leaving a business premises in Pinetown in possession of undisclosed amount cash when he was confronted by four armed men.

“The suspects opened fire, took the money and drove off in their gateway vehicle,” she said.

She said no one was injured during the robbery.

A case of robbery was opened at Pinetown police station for investigation.

Last month, The Mercury reported that cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of money were stolen from a well-known supermarket retailer in Montclair by armed robbers.

The police said a group of armed men entered the business premises on Kenyon Howden Drive.

The suspects held up the employees and a shootout ensued as they were leaving.

A 27-year-old suspect was arrested while fleeing the scene.

Further investigations led the police and security companies to a house in uMlazi where coins, cigarettes and clothing were found.
