DURBAN - A gang of armed criminals robbed a petrol station in Cottonlands, Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said the robbery occurred just after 6:30am.

He said Rusa received a call for assistance from a motorist who almost collided with the suspects’ getaway vehicle.

“He then drove into the garage and noticed an attendant who had been injured by the suspects,” he said.

Balram said when Rusa arrived at the scene, officers were informed that one of the suspects gained entry by identifying himself as a staff member.

The other suspects then forced their way into the building and attempted to break open the drop safe.

“When they failed, they pistol whipped an attendant on his head and fled…CCTV equipment was ripped off the wall by the suspects,” he said.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the complainant alleged that he was at his place of work with his colleagues at a local garage in Verulam when they were accosted by three armed males.

“At gunpoint, the suspects robbed them of their cellphones and cash before fleeing the scene on foot,” she said.

Gwala said a case of business robbery was opened at the Verulam police station for investigation.

According to Rusa, 10 cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.
