DURBAN - A man believed to be in his forties lost his life when the SUV he was driving crashed into a concrete support structure of an overhead bridge on the M4 Ruth First Highway in uMhlanga on Monday.

Emer-G-Med Paramedics spokesperson Kyle Van Reenen said paramedics attended the scene on the M4 Ruth First Highway, south at the Lighthouse Road bridge, together with Netcare911 and multiple other emergency services.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said paramedics arrived at the scene about 8.40am on Monday.

According to Van Reenen, on their arrival, paramedics discovered that an SUV had crashed into the concrete support structure of the overhead bridge.

“A male motorist believed to be approximately 40 years of age, was found severely entrapped in the wreckage with critical injuries,” said Van Reenen.

He said advanced life support paramedics worked hard to stabilise the man while he was being cut free using the Jaws-of-life.

According to Netcare 911 with the help of the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services the patient was extricated from the wreckage.

Despite a full advanced life support resuscitation, the patient’s condition rapidly deteriorated, said Herbst.

“Reports from the scene are that the man went into a state of cardiac arrest shortly after he was extricated and despite extensive resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead on the scene,” said Van Reenen.
