DURBAN - EThekwini Municipality refuted reports circulating that mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has died.
In a statement on Saturday night, the city confirmed that Kaunda is alive and hard at work in order to meet the needs of eThekwini residents.
“Kaunda appeals to everyone to refrain from fanning fake news of any kind because they create panic that might lead to an accident or even loss of life,” said municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela.
Mayisela said the mayor will be attending two engagements on Sunday.
“Tomorrow (today), the mayor will be addressing the community of Mfume in the morning and hold a public meeting in Clermont in the afternoon,” he said.
Earlier this month, The Mercury reported on an attempted hit on the Newcastle deputy mayor Musa Thwala which led to the death of his bodyguard.
This comes after the deputy mayor embarked on an investigation into the activities of the water, sanitation and refuse collection unit.
Thwala said the new leadership had questioned people billing the municipality for work not done, and stopped the contracts.
“I know that there is a price tag on my head. This attack was not random, but planned. That being said, I will soldier on because there is commitment from this council leadership to deal with corruption,” he said.
Weeks prior to this, the Amajuba District Speaker Reginald Ndima was shot dead, sparking fears that Newcastle and surrounds were experiencing a resurgence of political killings.
