DURBAN: A robbery suspect was allegedly shot in the knee after a gun went off during a struggle on a property in Assagay near Hillcrest in the Upper Highway area in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.

Mobi-Claw 911 spokesperson Mike Myers said the security company received a call at 2.20am today, regarding a robbery in progress.

He said Mobi-Claw operators immediately broadcast the incident to all the necessary responders.

Myers said the members quickly responded to the scene and, upon arrival, a struggle ensued between the homeowner, a tenant, security officer and the suspect.

“During the struggle, a shot went off and struck the suspect in the knee,” he said.

The scene was attended by the South African Police Service, Blue Security, Mzansi SecuriFire, Netcare 911, a farm watch group and Mobi-Claw management, he said.

“The suspect was arrested and transported to hospital under police guard,” said Myers.

It is unknown whose gun went off.

Police confirmed the incident but were unable to provide further details.

“We can confirm the incident, however, police are still busy at the scene,” said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.
