Durban - Two suspects have been arrested for a robbery at a farm in Camperdown on Wednesday.

An 80-year-old farm owner and his employee were restrained and tied up by two suspects at his farm on Umlaas Road in Camperdown.

The two suspects were traced and arrested close to the scene. The police and Magma Security confirmed the incident. The police also confirmed that the suspects may be linked to the robbery of a firearm from a 56-year-old man in Mpumalanga in 2013.

Shaheen Suleiman from Magma Security said that on Wednesday at about 1pm, Magma Security and Investigations received a call of a farm attack at Wynham Farm in Umlaas Road just off the R603.

The farm owner had been busy with his employee fixing the engine of a lawnmower in the workshop when two men entered it.

“One of them had a handgun and demanded that the two victims lie on the ground. The suspects then bound both victims' hands with tape and demanded the keys for the main house, which the owner complied with. The suspects then proceeded to the main house and gained entry.”

Suleiman said that the employee managed to untie himself and his employer and phoned a neighbour, who immediately responded and also alerted Magma Security and called the SAPS and farming community from the area.

The suspects fled on foot after realising that the neighbour and security officers were responding.

“The security officers had sight of the suspects fleeing the scene and co-ordinated together with the SAPS and farming community to surround the area. The suspects were traced and arrested close to the crime scene.

They were found in possession of the following stolen items: a laptop, a DVD player, two binoculars, a rechargeable light, headphones, and a black golf bag.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident and said that the suspects, aged between 27 and 32, were traced and arrested close to the crime scene.

She said the firearm found in the suspects’ possession was taken during a robbery in the Mpumalanga township located outside Hammarsdale in 2013.

In that case, a 42-year-old man was at Blocksini Stop in Georgedale when he was attacked by four armed men who threatened to kill him before robbing him of his firearm. The matter was reported to Mpumalanga police station and a case of robbery was opened for investigation.

Mbele added that both suspects would be profiled to establish if they were linked to any other cases. They are expected to appear on Friday in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court for robbery and the unlawful possession of a firearm.
