Nineteen people were injured after the taxi they were travelling in on Tuesday crashed into a wall in Sweetwaters outside Pietermaritzburg.

Mi7 National group spokesperson Colin David said the accident occurred just after noon today.

David said Mi7 National Group's Emergency Medical Services were dispatched after they received reports of a motor vehicle accident involving a taxi in the Sweetwaters area.

“Mi7 medics found that a taxi had crashed into a wall, leaving its 19 occupants – including two children – with injuries ranging from minor to moderate,” he said.

David said Mi7 medics, together with a number of other service providers on scene, worked quickly to stabilise all the patients before taking them to various hospitals.

“We wish all those injured a speedy recovery,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Monday afternoon, one person died in a crash on the R56.

David said the group's medical services were dispatched after reports of an accident on the R56 near Thornville outside Pietermaritzburg.

He said that on arrival medics found that a car and delivery vehicle had collided and that KZN EMRS was already on scene and had declared one man dead.

“Another occupant in the car, who had sustained moderate injuries, was stabilised by Mi7 medics using advanced life support interventions before being taken to hospital,” said David.

The occupants of the delivery vehicle had sustained minor injuries but did not require transport to hospital, he added.
