Cape Town - Zip Zap Circus took away three awards at the International Circus Awards for its acrobatic art film, Moya.

Following nominations in four categories, Zip Zap received the awards for Outstanding Performance by an Artist, Outstanding Digital Production and the Circus Talk Critics’ Choice Award for Social Relevance.

The film was created in response to the restrictions on live performances at the beginning of 2021, which forced the Zip Zap family to brainstorm different platforms and mediums on which to present the work of their professional performers.

In a collaboration between local and international film-makers, co-director Sabine van Rensburg called on local videographer Nic Good, of Fresh Air Crew, and fellow circus artist Brin Schoellkopf, of the US, to film and edit the film, as well as Samuel Renaud, of Montreal, Canada, to help translate the choreography of Moya from the stage to the screen.

The recognition of this local creation among some of the best circus companies in the world reflects the work Zip Zap has been doing for the South African arts community on a global scale.

Journey Returns will be the third collaboration with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. This time the addition of a rhythm section and the outstanding vocal ranges of Janine and Riyaan Cornelius promise to bring a foot-stomping spectacle to the Opera Stage.

Journey Returns ticket sales are now open on Computicket.

Show details: Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30, 3.30pm and 7.30pm, Artscape Opera House.
