Cape Town - The Western Province Motor Club (WPMC), in partnership with the City of Cape Town, RACESA, Spin Outlaws, Drift Outlaws and the Razor Custom Car Show are gearing up to host an explosive street-car culture event.

The action-packed programme will be the final Street Mania event of 2022, and will take place at Killarney International Raceway on Friday, September 30.

According to the Killarney International Raceway, on the day action will kick off with drifting and spinning on the Tar Oval from 4pm to 8.30pm.

Killarney International Raceway spokesperson Dave Abrahams said the programme will host various events including competitions for amateurs, novice drifters and experienced teams.

He said: “Once again, Drift and Spin Outlaws are offering street-car racers who want to try to throw their cars sideways in their timetable slot with 90 minutes of competition drifting, an hour for the novice drifters, and 90 minutes of Spinkhana action, as Team Cape Town takes on Team Atlantis for cash prizes.”

According to Killarney Raceway, team Atlantis Drifters led by Shane Green will take on Team Cape Town, captained by Riedwaan Oliver, while in the Spinkhana division, former No 1 Boxsie leads Team Cape Town and current No1 Shane Green heads Team Atlantis with R10 000 up for grabs for the winning team.”

Abrahams said the event will also host Street2Strip action on the quarter mile from 6.30pm to 10pm, open only to street-legal cars.

“We will have the Christmas tree set up with the times to be announced by the commentators, but the strip will not be prepared with Track Bite and the results will not be recorded or published.”

Abrahams said, however, the eight most impressive drivers chosen by selected judges will be invited to go head-to-head, with a cash prize of R2 000 for the heads-up racing winner and another R2 000 for the best burnout of the night.

“Spectators will get to enjoy both events for just R80 each for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12. The entry fee to participate is R230 for WPMC members and R300 for non-members, which includes the driver and two crew members. We will also accept late entries on the day of the event at the same prices,” Abrahams said.

Safety and Security Mayco member JP Smith said over the past five years, the City of Cape Town has ventured more into supporting and sponsoring motorsport events hosted in the metro.

Smith said: “Street Mania, Drift Outlaws, Bragging Rights and Robot Racing are platforms which the City has supported to provide drag races, spinners and racers with an opportunity to take up their sport in a safer environment.”
